Mise En Scene

Task 1:
  • In a science fiction film you would find futuristic props like hover boards, flying cars and holograms as well as new futuristic gadgets and devices. The setting of a sci fi film would typically be in a dystopian society or in space on another -planet much life star wars.
  • A romantic comedy would feature props like flowers, chocolate and every day items, and would be set in a city like New York or London amongst the busy city with the contrasting background of the nature in the parks like central park in New York.
  • A horror film would feature props that seem mysterious like haunted dolls and paintings or broken radios and jack in the boxes. This genre would also be set in an ordinary town like the film IT which is set in Derry.

Task 2:
  1. Both men in the picture appear to look focused as their eyes both fixate on something that the viewer cannot see out of the picture, as well as a little concerned and nervous for what is going to happen next.
  2. The man on the left appears to be trying to listen to what the voice is saying on the phone, whilst also occupied by something else as he looks up as if watching something. The man on the phone appears to be completely focused on the conversation.
  3. The man in the middle has his hands placed on his hips showing he is an authoritive figure that is in charge and feels power and control.

Task 3:

  1. The space between the male and the female character creates tension as they sit on the same sofa at opposite ends, telling us that they have just had an argument and that they are partners/lovers.
  2. The axe on the wood and chains indicate that the film is possibly a horror or thriller film that is gory and features a murder as well as possibly a psychopath that owns an axe.
  3. The two men dressed in black references to 'the men in black' a conspiracy theory that relates to aliens suggesting the film is a sci fi film, as well as the futuristic guns that the two men hold, indicating that they are going to be killing extra-terrestrial beings.
  4. The film poster's dark colours create the sense of danger and a dystopian society and possibly the end of the world as the colour palette suggests fire and the sun, followed by robots creating the idea that the film touches on the possible idea of the world ending highlighting the film is a sci fi film set in the future possibly on a different planet as the main character wears a space suit.

Task 4:

  • Mise en scene can convey period by using old fashioned clothing, makeup and hairstyles from the time the media is set in, as well as using technology that was available at the time, like using props like candles and horse and cart.

Task 5:
  1. High key lighting, the key lights are on the victims face, which highlights the victims emotions to the viewer so they can empathise with them, then the filler lights on the murderers face and back lights are behind them in the scene.
  2. Low key lighting, the key lights draw the viewers attention to the beam of light and then the filler lights focus on the body in the doorway and the backlights are behind the doorway that the man stands in front of.
  3. High key lighting, with the key lights focusing on the blonde woman in the middle of the three, showing that she is the protagonist to the viewer. Then the filler lights are on the women to the left of the protagonist and the backlights on the woman on the other side showing their importance to the viewer.
  4. Low key lighting, they key lights focus on the person reading a newspaper in the bathtub which contrasts the darkness of the mysterious figure in the doorway which indicates danger for the viewer, then the filler lights highlight the room that the scene is set which is the bathroom and the backlights draw attention to the mysterious figure in the doorway.
  5. Low key lighting, the key lights focus on the strange rabbit like figure in the scene making the character seem significant to the viewer, and then the filler light draws attention to the two boys beside the rabbit like character, with the back lights illuminating their strange surroundings that are dimly lit creating a sense of mystery for the viewer.
  6. High key lighting, the key lights focus on the older man sat at the table which highlights and intensifies his emotions to the viewer which show the man is deep in thought and possibly troubled or worrying about something, allowing the viewer to feel empathy for the man, then the filler lights draw attention to the other character sat at the table who is staring down into his lap which creates tension as the characters display a father and son type relationship, but they appear to not be speaking. The backlights show that the scene is set in a home in a kitchen dining area which also indicates the relationship between the two characters is father and son.

Genre photo and analysis of DISTINCT

The images above were taken based on the genre of a musical, and I achieved this through using a microphone prop and the high school setting to recreate a "high school musical" inspired picture, during Mondays lesson when we also learned the analysis of DISTINCT.

Ed Sheeran and Lil Uzi Vert vma performance

Above I have chosen this video of a live performance from the VMA's of Ed Sheeran and Lil Uzi Vert singing a collaboration of 'shape of you' and 'XO tour lif3' as I find it really interesting and unique how they manage to pair an acoustic pop song with a rap artist, as its two genres of music that you wouldn't usually pair together, however this performance does resemble Ed's other performance he did at the Brit awards earlier this year with stormzy, but I think that this particular performance is a bit more unique and interesting as Stormzy's music is a bit more mellow compared to Lil Uzi Vert.
